This important thread had dropped down to number two so I pinned it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Given the problem with Mr Ecclescake and the rather scary Tamara I'm wondering if I should move my birthday <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The traffic issue could actually be a big deal, and I suspect KW isn't the only one who'd like to watch the F1. Personally I'd rather play silly games and then watch the edited highlights; watching the whole race is too much like hard work for me <!--emo&--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Unfortunately I'm busy every other weekend in July with work related stuff, then the first week in August is Toko so it wouldn't be until the middle of August or even later...

What do people think? I'd rather not move it, but is the GP gonna mess things up too much..?

Well if you want to avoid the traffic then be in the area just as the qualifying starts on Sat and then head off just after the race starts on Sunday.

I also would probably watch the GP and unless you kicked me out would be happy enough leaving later in the evening after the traffic has subsided.

I definitely need to check the track maintenance schedules beforehand though. As I'm likely to be coming by train and bad works could seriously screw things up. In which case I will probably need to blag my housemates' car.

Shouldn't bother me too much - I'll be going on the opposite direction!

I'm not arsed about watching it, either.

I don't actually know what time it's on etc. The race itself is on Sunday PM no? Watching that wouldn't be a problem. There's every chance I'll sleep through it anyway <!--emo&--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I recon we stick to that weekend and just work with it. Folks can do what they like. I'm easy and there's always the 14" TV in the bedroom for anyone who needs a regular fix <!--emo&--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It sounds like it only really affects me then. <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It just means I only be able to make Saturday night - and I won't be able to get stupidly drunk - which is a bit of a shame 'cos I usually quite like that bit! <!--emo&--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well I've checked the track maintenance schedules and there doesn't seem to be anything happening that will affect me that weekend.

The only issue now is the cost. With taxi/bus/train as necessary I wonder whether it may be cheaper to hire a car and pay petrol. Or I could even get insured on my housemates car and then pay for petrol. But then I can't drink as much. I could make the travel cheaper by getting a network railcard, but when they boast about saving a third it normally means off peak at weekends. But as they are ?20 it could pay for itself reasonably quickly.

I've just spent about 40 mins trawling through the network rail crapsite trying to sort out fares etc. for all my upcoming trips.

It is a godawful site. I want to change just one paramter such as railcard type, off-peak or day to see if I can make the trip cheaper and every field is reset every time. You can't even make one small adjustment. And after all of that a network railcard would make absolutely no difference to any of my trips that incorporate all of the permutations of peak, off-peak, weekday, weekend etc.

The network railcard promised savings of up to 1/3.

The coach is usually a lot cheaper. I've been looking at train prices a lot this week because of working in London. Peak prices are crazy money <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Look out for fun fares and travel passes. Around here for example there is a travel pass you can buy from the coach driver for about ?10 which lets you go all over the place & back again, as far as about Oxford. I forget all the details, since I usually drive or scrounge a lift!

Northampton is a pretty big bus station with connections to most major towns. Where are you now? I've kinda lost track!!

I know coaches are cheaper but you don't get so much room and they normally take longer. Had there been engineering works I would definitely do so but I may have a look at National Express tomorrow, when I can get paid for it lol.

Well I've had a chance to look around National Express today and for all of my up and coming journeys they are more expensive than rail, as well as taking on average twice as long to get there. For two days then hire cars are just as expensive and that is before petrol costs are factored in. I don't know of any other coach carriers that might be worth looking at, but for the LAN, which is still a month away, there were no 'early bird' savings to be had. I don't think any of the other ticket types apply to me.

There is still the possibility of insuring myself on the house car and then paying for petrol, but train travel is FTW! at the minute as there is no conflict of usage.

If you can find one with a tankful of petrol, you won't even have to pay for that.

I wouldn't dream of doing that! <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Stealing from individuals is one thing, but taking stuff from huge, multinational conglomerates with multi-billion? turnovers is just wrong.

I mean, you're depriving the top execs of literally 0.0000001% of their bonuses when you steal like that. I just hope you realise that.
