OK, I'm getting back into doing some web design for a variety of reasons. I've been having a look around at some examples of good design, and the search led me on to some examples of bad design.

Some great examples here (Caution advised, these are really awful): <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<a href='http://www.dokimos.org/ajff/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.dokimos.org/ajff/</a> (Warning: this will sear your retinas. Put on some sunglasses before clicking the link <!--emo&:o--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='ohmy.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

<a href='http://www.havenworks.com/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.havenworks.com/</a>

I just don't know where to begin.... <!--emo&:huh:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/huh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='huh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<a href='http://thecreationmuseum.org/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://thecreationmuseum.org/</a>

Just poor... Although the fact that there is a "Creation Museum, Taxidermy Hall of Fame of NC and Antique Tool Museum" all rolled into one says a lot about the mindset of the owners. <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

My favorite so far though goes to this (If only because it comes from a company that should know better):

<a href='http://www.webwizz.net/home%20Page.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.webwizz.net/home%20Page.html</a>

A five page website? From the people that designed this? And all for just ?18 a week? Where do I sign up?

<!--emo&:rofl:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/rofl.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rofl.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyone have any others?

Lol, better than that, I can't even see the side menu when I opened it up.

I can't remember the name of it but I'll try and track it down, it's a wedding dress company that had the most awful graphics and music combo that you can imagine!!

Any tips and tricks, I have a website which is totally out of date and I need to re-register it and find somewhere to host it.... and if possible some good cheap/free webdesign software....

That WebbWizz one is just mind blowing. I wonder if it was set up by a 12 year old a decade ago, and he's forgotten about it? I'm tempted to "click on the magic hat" and ask them to "rush me more information" <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Free is usually best.

The parent site for this is hosted on 000webhost.com which is free, and actually a lot faster than a hosting company in London I used to pay good money to. There's no adverts, although they wouldn't mind if you gave them a credit note somewhere.

Obviously I design everything in a souped up version of Notepad, which is free. For a more WYSIWYG approach, there's <a href='http://www.kompozer.net/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.kompozer.net/</a> amongst many others.

The more complicated part is transferring the domain into your name. It's all just form filling, but I've never actually done it so I've no experience to draw on. Perhaps a call to WebbWizz might be in order <!--emo&:mmm:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/mmm.png' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mmm.png' /><!--endemo-->

Well I can't beat that! <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The problem I have with free hosting is that there is no SLA and no contract - your site can go down for days on end, or they can shut the hosting down altogether with no notice, and there's not a thing you can do about it (I had a free website with Heart Internet, they stopped the free hosting with one weeks notice <!--emo&<_<--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

Still, you get what you pay for - and if it does shut down or turn out to be useless, you can just go elsewhere!

If you want paid hosting, I use www.justhostme.co.uk - ?2.50 a month for the basic package, and they have a decent tech support too.

As for the domain name, has it actually expired? If so, it's just a case of purchasing it again, and getting it pointed to wherever your site is hosted (obviously not a problem if you get the hosting from the same company).

If it's still registered, I hear it's a fairly simple process, but like JJ I've never done it myself. I keep meaning to transfer my domain name from Heart, but it's kind of pointless unless it has a website to go with it. While I can build a website, I just really can't think of anything worthwhile to put on it. <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm thinking that may be the case.

If you go to the site index of <a href='http://www.webwizz.net/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.webwizz.net/</a> (as opposed to the "home%20Page" <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) you get what is either a sample site, or the site of the most pointless and disorganised association ever... <!--emo&:unsure:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The web design is better, in a 2001 kind of way, but it's still a confused mess. If you go to the members page you end up on 'sitedelux.com', and any links you go to after that end up in 'ianww.hostcentric.com'. <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For extra lulz, have a look at www.sitedelux.com. <!--emo&:rolleyes:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Nice.

Because nothing says 'unprofessional' like a website under construction. Especially if you're a web designer. <!--emo&:rolleyes:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That pizza one is just awful - it's like 1997 all over again, but with extra spelling and grammar errors (Coment's? <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

And the latest candidate:

<a href='http://mesohorny.co.uk/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://mesohorny.co.uk/</a>

Apart from the fact it's just crap and has an awful yellow background, it looks like they didn't bother checking all browsers. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

(If you can't see what I mean, have a look using FF. It works OK-ish on IE, and makes a good example of why checking these things is important. In this case, two letters in the code has completely borked this site for a hefty percentage of visitors. <!--emo&:rolleyes:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Eventually I hope to put something here, but for now it's not much more than a place holder.

I think it's been like that for nearly a decade <!--emo&:shame:--><img src='http://i2.ifrm.com/4013/140/emo/shame.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='shame.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Could we have a winner?

This one has everything: Popups, annoying animations, frames (oh dear god, the frames, they're everywhere!), confusing content, sounds, horizontal scrolling, the lot.

I also can't read any of the actual text. Not because it's German, but because it's behind the graphics and off the edge of the screen!
